We are all “...called to be holy, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ…” 1 Cor. 1:2 (NIV)

Think about that calling, “to be holy”. In the wonderful adventure of knowing Jesus and following Him we are to become more and more like Him in purity of heart, mind, word and action. And, it’s a daily thing isn’t it? Every day being careful not to sin against the Lord and doing God’s will not ours. I like what David said in Psalm 119:11 “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” I believe that spending time in God’s word regularly and consistently is a big key to living a holy life. Without it we can’t become more like Jesus. As we read and take in God’s word it washes us, empowers us, corrects us, guides us, protects us, encourages us and changes us. The word of God goes to work in us (1 Thessalonians 2:13) when we take it in and it renews our minds (Romans 12:2) changing us and making us more like Jesus and enabling us to know God’s will and ways.

I’ve always enjoyed and have been so grateful for those times in life when I’ve been dealing with something and the Holy Spirit will simply brings to my memory a Scripture that reminds me exactly what to do in that situation. That’s what David was talking about in Psalm 119:11. When we take God’s word into our heart regularly and consistently the Holy Spirit can take what we’ve learned and bring it back to our memory when it’s needed and that will help us to do God’s will and to live a holy life.

I want to encourage you, if you’re not regularly taking in the word of God start today. Read a chapter or two in the Bible every day and let the word of God go to work in you. God will speak to you through His word. When you read the word of God be determined to obey what you read and be systematic in your reading – read through one book in the Bible at a time. It’s also a great idea to have a spiritual notebook and write down what God has spoken to you about each time you read God’s word. We are all “…called to be holy…” and the word of God enables us to fulfill that calling we all have.
